Deadpoint Reflections

Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.[16]

—Helen Keller

Crux: Perception. Countless people prejudged our Everest team and especially Erik Weihenmayer. It was hard to hear their uninvited comments stream in from all over the globe, especially when they did not know this team or this blind man personally. These comments ticked me off. Even worse, I got mad at these people for something I have been just as guilty of doing myself: making a judgment based on a perception of my own rather than on evidence and truth. I have judged people before meeting them, cars before driving them, restaurants before tasting their food (sometimes this is just wisdom), cities before visiting them, and cultures before engaging them. I even judged these blind kids before we hit the Inca trail. The crux here is to let people show who they are and what they are capable of before putting a label on them. Recently, I had the opportunity to spend some quality time with someone from my church. This person usually had an unhappy look on his face and would come and go rather quickly. I got the feeling he was arrogant, and self-absorbed, and even looking down on people in general. I had these feelings even though I had never had a conversation with him that lasted longer than a handshake. After our circumstantially forced time together I learned this guy had a great sense of humor, was easy going, his heart for kids was very big, and his heart for the Lord even bigger still. This is a mistake I have made numerous times, and I wonder how many great friendships, opportunities, and experiences I have missed out on because of a wrongly formed perception.
